How To Effectively Pack When Moving House

Article updated 11/11/2020

Moving house doesn’t have to be stressful, in fact, you might consider it as a  therapeutic way to get your life in order and a positive way to declutter your storage. By planning in advance and organising your boxes, you’ll be able to make your house move in 2021 a whole lot easier and unpacking will be a breeze. So, how do you pack up your house for your change of address?

Firstly, what equipment will you need?

The key to organisation is getting the right equipment – so you don’t have to make as many trips between houses. We recommend the following:

  • Various sized boxes
  • Labels
  • Sellotape
  • Permanent marker
  • Old newspapers or bubble wrap (to use as protection for delicate items)
  • Stretch wrap for furniture
packing materials

Step-By-Step Guide On How To Pack When Moving House:

    1. Organise Your Time Effectively
We recommend that you begin packing either 1-2 months before your move date, leaving more time for a larger house/or if you have more items to pack. Packing one or two boxes a day during this time will make the process less overwhelming and put you in control.
    2. Start With Your Least Used Rooms
It makes sense to start packing your least used rooms and items – such as your shed and attic – which will hold gardening tools and Christmas decorations. Then move onto your other rooms and start packing non-essential items, until you are left with your essential items (such as a few changes of clothes, a wash bag, various pieces of kitchenware, etc).
    3. Declutter
Moving home is the perfect time to fully declutter your possessions and will streamline your moving process. Go through each room, one by one, deciding if you absolutely need an item or not. Collect all your unwanted items together and decide how you want to dispose of them, this could be through a garage sale, selling them on eBay or donating them to a local charity.
    4. Label Your Boxes
Make sure to label your boxes to avoid confusion during the relocation, so you can just place your boxes in the correct room when you move into your new place. It’s also important to note of what boxes contain fragile and hazardous items, to avoid any breakages or injuries.
    5. Put The Heaviest Boxes At The Bottom Of The Removals Truck
This may seem like common sense but it’s still crucial to ensure your belongings remain damage-free during their transportation. Wrap and pack all items with caution and place lighter items on top of heavy items, to prevent them from getting crushed. This will also make them easier to unpack once you’ve reached your destination.
