How to Feel At Home In a New City
Moving to a new city is one of the most difficult experiences you can face as a young adult, and how you deal with it may end up defining you. In this article, the Simon Long team will be going over some useful tips to help you feel at home in a new city, so you can hit the ground running and start flourishing. Let’s take a look.
Plan some days out before your move
If you still have time before your move, try and plan some days out for the first few weeks in your new city. You’re bound to feel overwhelmed in the first month or so, and just sitting inside by yourself may only add to that feeling, so if you can get yourself out and about and do something new, you might find yourself feeling at home a lot earlier than you thought you would.
Develop a routine as soon as possible
For many people, what makes them feel at home is having a routine that feels familiar to them. We have our favourite supermarkets, our favourite restaurants, our favourite pubs and bars, our favourite parks to walk the dog – all of these different places have a spot in our week somewhere, and that’s what ties the city that we live in to our familiar routine.
By establishing all these sorts of places in your new city as early as possible, you will be well on your way to creating a routine that helps make your new home feel more familiar.
Find some friends
One of the most difficult things about leaving behind our hometown is that we often leave behind some of our best friends, people that we’ve grown up with and know better than anyone. It can feel, at times, like you won’t find people like that again in a new city, but that isn’t true. It gets harder and harder to put yourself out there as you get older, but if you’re willing to put the time in you can still make new friends. We would encourage you to make an extra effort with your new colleagues at work, or you could even join some sport or social clubs to try and meet new friends outside of work.
Get your new house/flat fully set up right away
When you move to a new city, it can be easy to just get the essentials moved in and then leave the rest for months and months. We would advise against this, mainly because if you don’t start making your new house feel like home right away, you will be constantly reminded of the fact that you’re somewhere new, rather than somewhere that feels like home. So with this in mind, go ahead and put those pictures up on the wall and get that new sofa that you’ve been talking about, it could be just what you need!
